Fishing with my Dad

The sun beats down on the water’s face
And the waves caress the shore
The gulls soar upon a gentle breeze
And float down to explore

My hand grasps the fishing pole
As I climb among the rocks
To sit beside my father
Who is looking toward the docks

He carefully threads the wiggling bait
Onto my weighted lure
He casts it to the water
So I’ll catch a fish for sure

Beside my dad I sit for hours
And watch the sunset fall
The time together’s precious
So it won’t seem long at all

The bridge’s lights are glowing
Like a diamond necklace hung
Across the glassy water
In the night that is so young

We talk about the daytime
How it all went by so fast
We talk about the stars above
And wish that this could last

A tug upon my line
Pulls me from my reverie
A shriek of shock escapes my lips
There’s a beast beneath the sea!

My line begins to fly away
But my tiny grip is strong
The fish fights for what seems like hours
Though it wasn’t near that long

Give a little, take it back
Pull it to the shore
My dad helps me to keep my stance
As it gives a little more

Finally, as my strength is spent
The monster starts to tire
This lights within me hope
Burning, blazing like a fire

A few seconds later,
There he is! upon the pier
A quite impressive trophy
And it causes us to cheer

The goal is met, and fish in hand
We head back to the truck
Smiles wide, and spirits high
We marvel at our luck

The beaches in Rhode Island
Can be rocky, cold and wet
But the nights I spent there fishing
Are a thing I can’t forget

I think about that night sometimes
And smile at it still
The fish is gone and pictures fade
But the memory never will

Helping my best friend in the WORLD write an essay goes a little like this:

THE ESSAY
Essays are hard
This one's hurting my head
It's leaving me scarred
And I wish I were dead

For the words on the screen
Are spinning around
I don't know what they mean
And my brain starts to pound

Then the white noise starts fading
Inspiration comes fast
Ideas are invading
And I'm finished, at last!

I am sick. In such a way that makes me feel as though I'm doomed to a lonely, runny-nosed eternity filled with sniffles and loneliness. But I am bored and inclined to be creative if only to stave off the dread I have for class tomorrow.

Someone at church said that his mom and brother challenged him to write a haiku per day. I believe this to be a rather smashing idea and will attempt to do the same for you, my lovely (if limited) readers. Here is a haiku inspired by my freakish flu-like disease that I am currently battling.

Sick
A runny nose and
A throat that's been set on fire
Lonely misery.

And because that poem sounded so dang miserable, have a happy one!

Mailbox
Today a package
And a letter at my door!
Home is far, but near <3

Missing home! Sometimes it's tough being away. But it makes it that much more fun to visit. AND WHO DOESN'T LOVE GETTING MAIL????

That's all for today. I think the cold medicine is catching up with me....time for a nap....

Pilot (Ya know, 'cause it's my first post)

So I've decided to start my own blog. "Why," you might ask, "what could an Army brat, Mormon gal, band geek, college student, artist, authoress, singer, actress, football-playing-king-in-space possibly have to say that I haven't heard before?"

Well, I'm still trying to figure that out for myself.

A lot has happened to me throughout my life. I've moved, met new people, seen new things and places, and had a lot of adventures. I've had my highs and lows, challenges and blessings. And here, I hope to talk about a lot of those things that I normally don't get to brag about to a captive audience (you are captive, right?).

The name of my blog may seem a little strange. You see, I meant to start blogging a very long time ago, but the idea of coming up with a title for something that would be a permanent part of the world wide web made the OCD introvert in me crawl into a corner and shiver in the fetal position. I considered "Combat Boots and Sunday Suits," but that title mad it sound like I was a guy trying to find Jesus in the midst of a war. Or is that just me? Anyways, I was talking to an old friend the other day. He asked me to come up with a title for a Facebook group he was creating. I told him it had to be something catchy, and he jokingly named it "Something Catchy." It was then that I realized what a perfect name that would be for this blog, whimsical and open-ended. Here was a place I could write poetry and stories, post random fan art and questions about the mysteries of life.

So, welcome to my little blog. Hope you enjoy it.
